Yakama Indian poet, Earle Thompson, passed away in June, and Real Change News of Seattle asked Sherman to write a memorial for him. Sherman wrote the introduction to Earle's poetry chapbook, published by Real Change last year.

Sherman wrote the foreword for a new collection of essays and stories by Seattle high school students, It's Not Always Happily Ever After. The book is available at 826 Seattle, the nonprofit tutoring center, Santoro's Books, and on Amazon.com. All proceeds go to the center. Publishers Weekly announces (5/30/05) Sherman's new Young Adult book deal. Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will publish his young adult debut. The first book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is planned for release in 2007.

Sherman's short story "What You Pawn I Will Redeem" was selected by juror Ann Patchett as her favorite story for the The O. Henry Prize Stories 2005. Her essay on Sherman's story is posted online.
