MICHELLE ST. JOHN as AGNES ROTH
Michelle
St. John began her career at the age of 11, recording television
and radio jingles and voice-overs. At 13, she became the lead singer of Innercity,
a local Toronto band made up of 7 teenagers who played a mix of R&B and
jazz. At the age of 17, Michelle landed her first role in a CBC television
movie of the week 9B and has since stayed busy with film,
television, theatre and voice work. Theatre credits include the premieres
of Winterman for DTW in New York City; Darrel Dennis's Trickster
of 3rd Ave. East for Native Earth Performing Arts: Marie Clements
The Unnatural and Accidental Women for The Firehall Arts
Centre in Vancouver and Drew Hayden Taylor's Sucker Falls
for Touchstone and Ruby Slipper Theatres in Vancouver. Film and television
credits include: 9B (The Series); Arrest The Book;
Spirit Rider; Curse of the Viking Grave;
TNT's Geronimo and the CBC M.O.W. Liar Liar.
She has also appeared in Murphy Brown, Mentors,
Northern Exposure, Side Effects and This
is Wonderland. In 1989 Michelle earned a Gemini
Award for Best Actress for her work in Where the Spirit Lives
and a second Gemini
the following year for Best Guest Performance for her appearance in Alliance
TV's E.N.G. She can also be heard as Great Grandma on Treehouse
and APTN's Tipi Tales. Michelle can also be seen riding in
the car with Elaine Miles, in Sherman Alexie's Smoke Signals
and as the female lead, Agnes in his latest film, The Business of
Fancydancing. Michelle is featured on the soundtrack for The
Business of Fancydancing, singing OSINILSHATIN, co-written with Jennifer
Kreisberg (Ulali), in the Spokane language. In 1999, Michelle and partners
Monique Mojica and Jani Lauzon founded Turtle
Gals Performance Ensemble, a Native women’s theatre company
based in Toronto. Together they have written, performed and produced their
first original play; the critically acclaimed The
Scrubbing Project and are currently planning a tour while continuing
to develop a new play The Only Good Indian (working title),
facilitate theatre workshops and perform as an ensemble across Canada and
the United States. Michelle currently serves on the Advisory Board of the
Reel World Film Festival, the Toronto Arts Council – Theatre Committee
and is a 2003/04 Dora Juror for the Independent Theatre Category. This spring
Michelle will launch a new radio show called Red Tales as
Associate Producer and Host, for Aboriginal Voices Radio. Red Tales is literary
show, featuring Indigenous writers from across the continent. Michelle is
currently working on her first solo album of original music and will soon
make her directorial debut with a short film, currently in development.
