Holy shit, I just learned from this Atlantic Monthly article, by Doran Larson, that the average life expectancy of American prison guards is only 59 years.

The mass incarceration of Americans is bad for everybody involved. It's bad for the whole damn country.

But the Scandinavian model, as outlined in the Atlantic Monthly piece, is one that we should seriously consider for US prisons.
